Our Story

The Creation

In 2021, friends and family received the terrible news of the passing of Brendan Leddy. Brendan Leddy was an avid skateboarder, a military veteran, and an inspiration to many of us. He was also a core member of the Calais, Maine Skatepark Committee.

Friends, family and members of the Calais Skatepark Committee met via Zoom to support each other during this time of great loss. In the beginning we had the idea to send a member of our youth skateboarding community to Camp Woodward in honor of Brendan.

All Hands on deck

Once this idea was decided on, it was all hands on deck. We raised enough funds to send not one, but two kids to Camp Woodward in Brendan’s name. After covering the cost of camp, we had additional funds available, and we wanted to give back to our community. Since Brendan was a veteran, our focus was on that community, and led to our first donation to the Calais Veterans Center.

The support from our local community and businesses was a little overwhelming (in a good way!). The decision was made to continue our efforts and to make the Woodward Trip a yearly scholarship.

Nonprofit

We had earned the respect and trust of the community. We were shining new light on the sometimes negative stereotype of the local skatepark and its skaters. It was time to keep growing… Our involvement in community events and fundraising continued to build. We started to explore the idea of supporting other skateparks outside of “our own”. The idea to become an official 501(c)(3) was brought up at a meeting. Many weeks later we had an election of officers & selected our board.

we’re official

It’s official. The “Brendan Leddy Memorial Fund” 501(c)(3) was born.
